The distinctive yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us locate the video.
Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to check the site from which the images originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow colour of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video.
Identifying other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were captured.
Additionally, we verified that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not undergone manipulated.
