Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle In the Wake of Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also included high-profile passengers.
The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Buried Under Misogyny
The researcher, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the historic significance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.
She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, such as spotlight on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The fully automated spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of space.
