Are You Able to Crack This? That Overlooked Dutch Creation That Shaped the Contemporary Globe
One can find many contenders for the designation as “world’s most significant invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The combustion motor.
According to a recent publication, though, that title should go to the mechanised timber mill invented through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised sawing, constructing a modest trading ship necessitated approximately ten sawyers laboring for 90 days,” notes the author. “Using wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured within a week.”
Owing to this rapid automated saw, that converted logs to boards using virtually no manual labor, Dutch builders could construct ships more quickly than anyone else, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, financial and artistic dominance in Europe and the world.
The First Genuine Industrial Machine
The inventor's sawmill, argues the writer, represented “mankind’s first authentic factory machine.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. A single part transformed the rotary movement to up-and-down motion to power the saw. A separate mechanism changed the spinning movement into a lateral motion advancing the timber toward the blade. A ratchet system shifted the log ahead a measured step per cycle.
“Every component was modest by itself. The Dutchman’s brilliance lay in how to combine these parts so they acted in a perfectly controlled order, sawing on every descending stroke while moving with each upward stroke. It was a remarkably clever use of fundamental parts.”
